The plum (Prunus domestica), is a fruit native to the lands of the Lower Danube, Persia, Armenia and the Caucasus.

Although it has been known since antiquity, its consumption did not reach popularity until the Middle Ages.

In this sense, Charlemagne, in the year 812, planted plum trees of various species in their imperial properties. It is currently grown in many regions of Europe.

The plum receives different names plum or cirolero, ameixeiro or ciroleiro niso, cirgüeyo and ambruiño (Asturias) and belongs to the family of Rosaceae.

They come in a wide variety of colors, ranging from purple and red, to yellow, green and blue.

Plums can be consumed raw, also as a culinary element, for preserves, jam and sweet pasta. There is also the prune which is highly valued in the world of natural medicine.

Nutritional and healing properties

Plums contain 71 calories, 75.6 g of water, 0.8 g of protein, 0.9 g of fruit acid, 15.7 g of carbohydrate; and 0.6 g of minerals.

Its combination of minerals is very similar to that of the pear with less salt and almost the same amounts of potassium and phosphorus which means that plums can be taken in all the disease regimes in which the diet has to be low in calories and salt as in diseases of the circulatory system, kidneys (fluid retention) and the liver.   In this sense, a quarter cup of plums has 317 mg of potassium or 9% of the daily value.

It also has anthocyanins, pigments of reddish blue tone that gives its intense color to plums, which protects against cancer by eliminating harmful free radicals.

The plum and prune have both insoluble fiber (helps to give volume to the stool and facilitates its elimination thus avoiding constipation) as soluble ones (which lowers the bad cholesterol levels).

Popular remedies

Prune remedy for constipation.  Moisten for 12 hours five to ten dried prunes in half a glass of water. Consume the plums in the night and the water in which they have softened the next morning before eating anything else.

Desintoxicating prune remedy.  Wash a handful of plums and three strawberries. Split and place them in a blender together with a glass of water. Blend for a few moments until you get a refreshing juice. Take a glass of this juice in the mornings twice a week.

Plum remedy to lose weight.  Wash a grapefruit, cut it in half and extract its juice. Wash five plums and place them in a blender along with the grapefruit juice and half a glass of water. Blend for a moment. Drink a glass daily to facilitate weight loss.

Energic plum remedy. Blend 1/2 cup of skim milk, 1 spoon of filleted almonds, 1/2 cup of blackberries and 5 prunes without seed until they are perfectly integrated. Take a glass of this juice when you feel tired.

Plum remedy to prevent bone loss. Daily take a handful of plums.

Healthy recipe with plum #1: Chicken with plums

4 portions

Ingredients

450 g of chicken breast

2 tablespoons of flour

2 teaspoons of olive oil

1/3 cup of pitted and chopped prunes

1 chopped shallot

2 teaspoons of Dijon mustard

1/4 cup of apple juice

1/4 cup of chicken broth

1/2 teaspoon of dried basil

Batter the chicken with the flour. Heat it, in a large nonstick skillet, oil over medium heat. Add the chicken and fry until is done, about 4 minutes per side.

Then, transfer the chicken to a hot plate. Mix the plums, onion, mustard, juice, broth and basil in the pan. Increase the heat to strong and boil the sauce, stirring and scraping whatever is in the bottom, until it is reduced by half, about 3 minutes. Pour the sauce over the chicken and serve it hot.

Healthy récipe with plum #2: Salad with prunes and orange

Ingredients

4 oranges

2 red onions

150 g of prunes

50 g of almonds

Salt and pepper.

For the dressing

1/2 glass of lemon juice

1 tablespoon of honey

3 tablespoons of oil

1 tablespoon of cinnamon

Preparation Peel and cut the oranges into thin slices; then, check them, removing well the white filaments. Peel and chop the onion in thin julienne and extract the bones of the prunes.

Place the ingredients for the dressing in a large bowl and emulsify them with the help of a blender or adding, little by little, the oil while stirring with a fork.

Place it in a serving dish or on individual plates a background of oranges and alternate, on top, the chopped onion, the plums already clean of bone and the chopped or toasted almonds in a skillet without fat. Season it with salt and pepper and with the dressing and mix it well.

Other culinary ideas with prunes

Fill it with cottage cheese and serve the plums as an appetizer.

Cut into pieces and add to the fruit salads, especially if they carry fresh oranges.

Make in the pan with chicken and almonds. Serve with pasta and a green salad.

Recommendations

Select the plums according to the use you are going to give them. For example, those that do not have bone are good for preparing compotes; the others are ideal for eating alone. Some brands, in particular vacuum packed, are not so dry and can be eaten directly from the bag, while the others must be soaked.

If the plum is not hard, it will ripen in a brown paper bag at room temperature, after a few days.

Keep the plums well wrapped and in a dry and fresh place; it can be the fridge.

Soak them in a little amount of apple juice or orange if they are very dry. In the case of a cup of dry prunes, a half cup of juice and about 5 minutes of soaking will be required.

Caution

This fruit contains a large amount of natural sugar. Therefore, it can irritate the colon of those who suffer irritable bowel syndrome especially plums when they are prunes.
